Fundraising is a necessary part of being a charity or not-for-profit group, but there is legislation and regulations which boards must be aware of and comply with.
Responsibility for the fundraising and financial sustainability of the charity rests with the Board, although fundraising activities may be delegated.
The Fundraising Regulator is the independent regulator of charitable fundraising. Their role is to set and promote standards for fundraising practice and investigate, and regulate, cases which have led to public concern. The Code of Fundraising Practice outline the standards expected of all charitable fundraising organisations across the UK.
Trustees should be aware of the charity’s responsibilities under the Code of Fundraising practice, and the Chartered Institute of Fundraising have produced useful guidance.
